In this particular day, every family needs to send away the house god to heaven to report to the "biggest god" if this family behaved well or not during the year. The house god will not be back to your house until the 4<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_2" class="blsp-spelling-error">th</span> day of new year (when was Feb 17 for 2010).<br /><br />During the absence of your house god, you need to do annual house cleaning and finish all cleaning jobs before noon of last day. In tradition, you should not do any cleaning or using sharp items from Jan 1 to Jan 15 of lunar calendar (in the past, there were 15 days of celebration during farmer times but now only celebrating Jan 1 to Jan 5 of lunar calendar). If you do some cleaning, including throw away garbage, it is viewed as you are throwing away your entire year's fortune.<br /><br />There will be a family gathering dinner in new year's eve (like Christmas lunch/dinner in Germany), however, everyone needs to take a bath before joining the dinner. The old saying is, there was a monster that would come out to hunt people every year end, and the everyone treats the year end dinner as his/her last meal before eaten by the monster. So, normally the dinner will be served with more than 10 dishes, regardless how many people join the dinner, since this could be the last meal. Then, someone post red paper in the front door by accident and found the monster was scared of red color. So, every family copies the behavior to post red paper in main entrance to scare away the monster even until today.<br /><br />After new year eve dinner, kids (defined as "who is still not married") will receive "red envelop" from senior generation. Inside red envelop, there is money for kids to buy items they like, such as fireworks, toys, etc. (but normally parents will educate kids that you should give whatever red envelops you received to parents). The monetary value depends on the age and the relationship of parents with the giver. It could vary from 150 Euro to 1500 Euro, etc. When kids receive red envelop, kids should say something nice back to parents and <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_3" class="blsp-spelling-error">opa</span>/<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_4" class="blsp-spelling-error">oma</span>, etc. Something like "wish you long life", "wish you a great fortune of next year", or simply happy Chinese new year. Then everyone stays up until midnight (meaning to safeguard <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_5" class="blsp-spelling-error">opa</span>/<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_6" class="blsp-spelling-error">oma's</span> long life). Lots of fireworks would be fired up like regular new year eve.<br /><br />The first day of new year, you should visit your father's side family (and get more red envelop). The second day of new year is to visit your mother's side family. The third day, you can sleep late since you have been busy since new year eve. And, parents will ask kids to go to bed early on the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_7" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">third</span> day's night since it is the day in tradition that "rats" will hold their marriage and human beings should be kind enough to leave the rat family some space for celebration. You need to pick up the god on the 4<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_8" class="blsp-spelling-error">th</span> day (the god you sent away on Dec 24<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_9" class="blsp-spelling-error">th</span>), including "finance god" (who is in charge of your fortune). All commercial activities resume on the 5<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_10" class="blsp-spelling-error">th</span> day of new year.<br /><br />During new year holiday, parents are not allow to yell or beat their children, and parents need to buy new clothes for their kids and dress them up in the first day of new year for family visit.<br /><br />In old days, all celebration ends on the 15<span id="SPELLING_ERROR_11" class="blsp-spelling-error">th</span> day which is <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_12" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">lantern</span> festival (like the <span id="SPELLING_ERROR_13" class="blsp-spelling-corrected">lantern</span> festival in Germany).
